I have seen the rise and fall of many famous musicians. It is a fact that some people are lucky to start life on a sound footing – they are fortunate to get into their own home from the word go. As a house boy, Stephen now has to put into use the home skills he learnt. So he cooks, washes, goes to the market and does all the things one will expect a house boy to do. Stephen embraced the news and took up the challenge to learn new things.

When Stephen started work in Mr Opoku’s office, he realized the firm worked on Accounts and other documents for clients. He told himself he will learn that job. Computers were new in the early 90s. The firm worked on the accounts of a number of reputable firms and institutions. As a messenger, Stephen begun to meet officers and top managers of such institutions any time he was sent to deliver documents. Stephen decided to start sleeping in the office – he would wait for everyone to leave the office and then would switch on a computer and started learning how to type. He will join office tables and sleep on them after his studies. At down he will quickly arrange the office for the next day’s work. Stephen learnt other things in the office like photocopying and comb binding to aid work in the office. Everyone found him to be a very useful messenger. Then the unfortunate happened.

Mr. Opoku became ill and was hospitalized. Everyone was hopeful that he will return home in a few days but this didn’t happen. Mr. Opoku’s conjugal family begun to give up on him. Stephen will be the one to prepare hot water and food to his boss in the hospital. There were office bills to be paid, so Mr. Opoku on his sick bird showed Stephen how to write cheques and Stephen will send them for signature. That was how Stephen picked ideas to manage a business. Stephen was by the bed side of Mr. Opoku when he breathed his last.

Now the fighting over Mr. Opoku’s estate started right after his demise and lingered on for years with court injunctions on assets and so on. The Land lords of Mr. Opoku’s office took possession of their property when the rent expired. And because of litigation all the office equipment were packed outside at the back of the office. Once Mr. Opoku’s family were not United, no single person could come forward to own the assets. So they were left to rot at the back of the office.

Wise Stephen called some of the workers to take advantage of the goodwill Mr. Opoku had. His colleagues did not take him seriously. Stephen managed to secure a rent arrangement with the Land Lords to continue to stay at the Boys quarters in the office yard. Day in day out, Mr. Opoku’s clients will come needing Office Support services – typing, printing, photocopying etc. And from his widows might, haven acquired an old Desktop computer and Sharp Photocopier Machine, Stephen made new clients and served the other clients he was a messenger to.

Today Stephen owns an Ultra Modern Printing Solution emporium, printing Large Formats for huge bill boards, T-Shirts, Educational books for schools, funeral brochures, just to name a few.

Lessons:
1. The skills we learn at work are not for Salary but they become ours for the future.
2. Every good leader looks for that worker he can trust and make him a confidant.
3. Like David in the Bible, you may not be noticed because you tend the sheep in the bush. But when the apointed time comes, you will apply and find relevant all the skills you learnt whilst people looked down on you.

There are others who join companies because of how the office looks – posh, classic, state of the art etc. I have seen many of such who quickly wind up because the owners soon find out that they cannot service the loans they took to set up the office. Question is why do you envy those ahead of you at the work place or in life? I suggest you make them mentors instead whom you can learn from. They took time to build what they have done and if you learn the right precepts and lessons from them, you might take a shorter route to get there. Ghanaians like to wear the latest in town, no matter how it hurts their pocket. Let’s learn that life is not a race. Only one year is such a long time for you to have such a tremendous paradigm shift in your life, by dint of hard work and dedication.
Society is full of people who do vocational work in one way or the other : painting, fitting, sewing, drawing, photography, editing etc. Whilst I recommend that the best way to get knowledge in these professions is through schooling, it is not everyone who can afford the fees to get the training. The key principle here is that you will be examined at the end of the course before you are certified. Once you do not have the patience to wait to sit for your exam, you don’t get the certificate. Similarly, what is essential if you choose the apprenticeship approach is to get the patience to learn the trade from a master AND COMPLETE the course or training. Patience is the virtue needed to surmount all the challenges you will face before you wear the crown. Half-baked fitters, contribute to accidents and deaths on our roads. Half-baked building contractors contribute to collapsing of structures in our cities. How I wish that our entertainment industry will have regulations to the extent that you must show certification to be allowed to practice just like the Doctors, Lawyers and some other professions do. Because our mediocre outputs also “kill”
It pays to go through the mill thoroughly and fully. Even if you see your peers cutting corners and taking the lead, tarry not for at the-appointed time God will make all things beautiful for you.
Lessons:

1. A dream needs time to mature. Do not rush in life
2. Sometimes you need people to realise your dreams. But know what you discuss and what you keep
   to yourself.
3. Beware of those who push you into action, you might not fall in the pit with them
4. Do not get tired at doing the right things in life.

The story is told of a wealthy man who had a house helper. One day the man of the house told his servant he was traveling for about a month. He gave his servant one of the vehicles in the house to use. There were some challenges with the vehicle so the master directed his servant to send the car to the family mechanic and make sure the car was well fitted. The house help obliged and sent the vehicle but never paid any particular attention to the fitting work and the repairs.
Soon, the one month came and the owner of the house returned. The man called a meeting and announced that he was relocating to stay in the United States so he then blessed the vehicle the servant went to repair as a gift of his appreciation for the services he had received all these years from the servant. The servant could not show complete joy for the gift because if he knew that the car was going to be his, he would have changed tyres, breaking system, air conditioning etc. But that was his lot.
No one is born with a silver spoon in the mouth. People work hard and change their destiny by dint of hard work.
Don’t join the nay sayers by back biting and speaking negatively about people’s success. Rather get close if you can, and learn something from their success story.
You feel unconcerned when you are wasting someone’s resource but you forget that the resource was
meant to prepare you to manage your own in the future.
Wealth only goes to people who have value for any and everything.
