For the 1968 season they switched to Cosworth Ford engines. These continued to 1983, apart from a couple of Alfa Romeo examples, and then the TAG-Porsche turbo came in. This was the start of the MP4 cars, and the first entire carbon-composite chassis. McLaren GT is the sports car racing arm of McLaren Automotive, established in 2011 to develop, build and support all McLaren track and GT race activities. The division is currently responsible for the design, development and production of the 720S GT3 and 570S GT4, along with the new Artura GT4 and Artura Trophy. All three cars were aborted in 2005, with Mercedes rumoured to have considered the projects simply too costly to turn into a solid business case, although Mercedes’ AMG subsidiary produced a flagship sports car called the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

McLaren retained the Alonso – Button pairing for the 2016 season. The second year of the Honda partnership was better than the first, with the team being able to challenge for top 10 positions on a more regular basis. However, the season started with a massive crash at the Australian Grand Prix in which Fernando Alonso sustained rib fractures and a collapsed lung after colliding with Esteban Gutiérrez and somersaulting into the crash barriers. Alonso, as a result of his injuries, was forced to miss the second round of the Championship, the Bahrain Grand Prix, and was replaced by reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne.

Norris’s new deal might not be as ‘long term’ as McLaren hopes
The McLaren F1 was a landmark piece of technology that brought Formula 1-level technology to the road and has been written about ad nauseam. What’s less talked about is how South-African Formula 1 car designer Gordon Murray got McLaren’s first production road car in motion. He had been thinking about a road car, but in 1988, the company’s directors decided just building a “regular” supercar would be too easy. That was music to Murray’s ears, and he sat down and wrote a four-page manifesto on how the supercar would not compromise anything.

McLaren is best known as a Formula One constructor, the second oldest active team and the second most successful Formula One team after Ferrari, having won 183 races, 12 Drivers’ Championships and 8 Constructors’ Championships. McLaren also has a history of competing in American open wheel racing, as both an entrant and a chassis constructor, and has won the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) sports car racing championship. The team is a subsidiary of the McLaren Group, which owns a majority of the team. In Q2 2023, McLaren announced a new car series for extremely limited production, known as the Legacy Series.
The team finished ninth in the constructors’ standings with 27 points, McLaren’s worst performance since 1980. With former McLaren men Nichols and Prost (Barnard had moved to the Benetton team), Ferrari pushed the British https://bigbostrade.com/ team more closely in 1990. McLaren, in turn, brought in Ferrari’s Gerhard Berger, but like the two seasons before, the Drivers’ Championship was led by Prost and Senna and settled at the penultimate race in Japan.
A limited edition called the SLR Stirling Moss was introduced. The car was the final SLR produced and a tribute to Stirling Moss. Beneath the scissor-doors is a plaque with Moss’ signature on it. Norris placed sixth in the drivers’ championship, one point behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who signed a multi-year contract renewal on Thursday. And the F1 team’s long-term vision has been set given extensive investment into the new windtunnel and simulator at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, and the extension of the Mercedes deal for the next set of engine rules. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella did hint that a closer tie with Toyota was possible, in the form of “a bit of exchange of how we deal with performance, how we deal with driver development”.
Most famously, he was one of the drivers of the first Ford GT40 race cars to win at Le Mans. After proving himself as a race car driver, he formed Bruce McLaren Motor Racing (BMR) in 1963, which made its first entry into Formula 1 in 1966. Unfortunately, CanAm is where Bruce’s story ended as he died on the Goodwood Circuit in the UK while testing McLaren M8D. Norris secured the team’s first pole position in the hybrid era at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix but was unable to convert it to a win, finishing in seventh place due to the sudden drastic change in weather conditions and team strategy in the last two laps of the race. A subsequent drop in form in the latter part of the season saw McLaren ending up fourth in the constructors’ championship behind Ferrari. In 2000 McLaren won seven races in a close fight with Ferrari, but ultimately Ferrari and Schumacher prevailed in both competitions.
The Artura combines an all-new twin-turbo V6 with a battery-electric powertrain to create a plug-in hybrid model. The design is still unmistakably McLaren with the signature headlights and prominent air vents. This is the model that will spearhead McLaren’s charge as the carmaker aims to convert to an all-hybrid lineup by 2024. Customer deliveries are expected to start in the latter half of the year, but initial impressions of the car have been generally positive. In 1988, the McLaren MP4/4 had a very successful year.
In 1981, McLaren merged with Ron Dennis’ Project Four Racing; Dennis took over as team principal, and shortly afterwards organised a buyout of the original McLaren shareholders to take full control of the team. This began the team’s most successful era; with Porsche and Honda engines, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna won seven Drivers’ Championships between them and the team took six Constructors’ Championships. The combination of Prost and Senna was particularly dominant—together they won all but one race in 1988—but later their rivalry soured and Prost left for Ferrari. Fellow English team Williams offered the most consistent challenge during this period, the two winning every constructors’ title between 1984 and 1994. By the mid-1990s, Honda had withdrawn from Formula One, Senna had moved to Williams, and the team went three seasons without a win. With Mercedes-Benz engines, West sponsorship, and former Williams designer Adrian Newey, further championships came in 1998 and 1999 with driver Mika Häkkinen, and during the 2000s the team were consistent front-runners, with driver Lewis Hamilton taking their latest title in 2008.
Here, Senna collided with Prost at the first corner, forcing both to retire, but this time Senna escaped punishment and took the title;[80] McLaren also won the Constructors’ Championship. The 1991 year was another for McLaren and Senna, with the ascendant Renault-powered Williams team their closest challengers. By 1992, Williams, with their advanced FW14B car,[81] had overtaken McLaren, breaking their four-year run as champions, despite the latter winning five races that year. The Elva is completely roofless and sports a design inspired by race cars designed by the legendary Bruce McLaren in the late ’60s. McLaren now offers a windshield option, but otherwise, the occupants are completely exposed to the elements.
Examples include Alfa Romeo branding Sauber in its image for several seasons, ending in 2023, and Ford partnering with Red Bull for the 2026 engine rules in a deal many believe is a mostly commercial deal with some technological involvement. Of course, an automotive-level partnership that is parlayed into a minor F1 involvement would be different to a TGR F1 project. Combustion engine cars, hybrids and fully electric vehicles are all in McLaren’s plans for future car line-ups. Though no manufacturer was named by Sky, a McLaren automotive tie-up with Toyota seems to make the most sense. If so it would raise – once again – the possibility of a partnership on the F1 side as well.
